With more and more industries relying on Lithium batteries the need for safe storage of these cells, modules and battery packs is growing at an exponential rate across the globe. We have already seen many total loss scenarios caused by Lithium battery fires in the logistics industry, vehicle workshops and dealerships, battery recycling centres just to name a few.
This is why we have designed and introduced the Fire Safety Containmant Unit - FSCU which is the first global solution with recirculating water suppression and containment to combat the ever-increasing rise in Lithium battery incidents affecting many sectors across all continents.
The FSCU like its predecessor the Electric Vehicle Containment Unit (EVCU) utilises our patented design for recirculating high pressure misting systems to allow continual cooling and fire suppression in the event of a defective or damaged cell entering into thermal runaway or thermal cascade.
All onboard water is contained filtered and recirculated and therefore also prevents any environmental contamination. The units are easily emptied into IBC containers for safe removal and disposal of any contaminated water.
Early detection and suppression
Early detection and interaction is key in tackling fire incidents. When a Lib cell enters ‘Thermal runaway’ we know they are extremely difficult if not impossible to extinguish as they create their own Oxygen and Hydrogen creating a self-sustaining chemical reaction. Even full submersion in water will not extinguish the Lithium cell.
Most other manufacturers rely on producing a ‘fireproof box’ which is designed to contain a fire but without a first strike capability the fire will spread rapidly within their boxes to neighbouring cells and products leading to an extremely serious fire with thousands of litres of toxic and flammable gases being released into the atmosphere. In addition, these ‘Boxes’ will eventually fail due to the extreme temperatures being produced from the involvement of multiple batteries.
However, there is a solution - What you can do is extinguish the flames emitting outside the cell which spreads to neighbouring cells and products. This therefore prevents the spread of the fire and contains the fire to the point of the fire’s origin.
The principle is quite simple with early detection of a fire starting then a rapid high pressure water misting system to extinguish the flame front with the production of steam whilst wetting and cooling all other products within the container. This will therefore contain the original fire to within the Lib cell or module and prevent a rapid escalation of the incident from the involvement of other batteries or products contained within the unit.
"Utilising steam to fight fires is a tried and tested method used by fire services across the world. The expansion ratio of water to steam at 100 degrees Celsius is 1700:1 meaning 1 litre of water creates 1700 litres of steam which inhibits fire growth. At 530 degrees Celsius this expansion ratio increases to 4200:1. The hotter the fire the more effective the water becomes."
All units can also be fitted with either refrigeration units or air conditioning units to control the temperatures within the units. This is especially important in hot countries as internal temperatures can rise above safe levels for storing Lib cells or other flammable substances. In addition, units can be fitted with Telematics to send notifications should a unit activate.
